More Than a Name

The church in Sardis had a reputation for being alive, but Jesus said they were dead. That is a sobering warning. It is possible to have the appearance of faith without the life of faith. A name, a reputation, or a history is not enough. Jesus sees beyond the brand. He knows the true condition of His people. The call to Sardis reminds us that we must own our faith, not simply wear the name of Christian. Faith that is only a label is costly, because Christ calls His people to live according to His Word and His ways.

Wake Up and Strengthen What Remains

Jesus tells Sardis to wake up and strengthen what little remains. Their actions were incomplete before God, and what remained was close to death. Sardis should have known better. Their own history was marked by moments when the city thought it was secure, only to be taken by surprise. That same spiritual danger was now present in the church. Pride, ego, and false confidence can leave us exposed. There may be places in our lives we think are too strong for the enemy to reach, but Jesus calls us to stay awake, pay attention, and return before it is too late.

Remember, Retain, Repent

The way forward is clear. Remember what you heard and believed at first. Hold firmly to it. Repent and turn back to Christ. This is not a complicated call, but it is urgent. Sardis needed more than activity. They needed life. The image of soiled garments shows that our deeds matter. What we wear spiritually reveals what we are walking in. Yet the hope of the gospel is that stains are not removed by pretending, performing, or trying to look clean. Only Christ can make us new. The old is gone, and life comes through the mercy and grace of God.

Clothed in White

Jesus promises that those who overcome will be clothed in white, their names will remain in the Book of Life, and He will confess them before the Father and His angels. This is the hope of glory. The goal is not merely to look alive, but to be alive in Christ. He is the One who raises the dead, restores what is fading, and gives His people a new identity. There is no reputation worth keeping if Jesus does not know our name. But for those who belong to Him, the promise is secure. They will walk with Him in white.
