Citizens on the Run
(Philippians 3:12-21 ESV)
Keep Pressing Forward
Paul writes as someone who has followed Jesus faithfully, suffered deeply, and served fruitfully, yet he still says he has not arrived. He keeps pressing on because Christ has already made him His own. This is the beauty of the gospel. We do not run to earn salvation. We run because Jesus has already taken hold of us. The Christian life is not cruise control. It is an ongoing pursuit of Christ, fueled by grace. Maturity is not pretending we have crossed the finish line. Maturity is knowing we have not arrived and continuing to press forward.
Forget What Lies Behind
Paul says there is one thing he does: forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what lies ahead. Forgetting does not mean pretending the past never happened. It means refusing to let the past control the pace of the present. Past shame can weigh us down, but past success can make us lazy too. Both can keep our eyes off the goal. The call is to keep moving forward, letting life match faith. We hold true to what we have attained, not by coasting, but by walking in humble dependence and confident hope.
Watch Your Stride
Paul warns that not everyone running near us is running toward Christ. Some are ruled by appetites, comfort, shame, and earthly things. Their minds are set on the ground, and their path leads away from life. That warning should move us to tears, not pride. It also invites us to ask honest questions. Who are we imitating? Whose pace are we copying? What is shaping our schedule, values, habits, and desires? Citizens of heaven cannot run well with their eyes glued to the earth. We need examples who help us keep our gaze fixed on Jesus.
Run Like Heaven Is Home
Our citizenship is in heaven, and from there we await our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. This means our deepest identity, loyalty, and hope belong to another Kingdom. We are not running to escape this world forever, but waiting for the King who will return and make all things new. He will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body by His resurrection power. Our weariness has an expiration date. Our brokenness does not get the final word. So run hard. Keep step. Look up. Your King is coming.
